How to calculate your grant request amount
Please select the relevant adjustment type to find out how to calculate the amount you can apply for
Example A – you need an ensuite room
Maeve requires an ensuite room to meet her disability-related needs. The cost of an ensuite room at her university accommodation costs £175 per week, contracted for 48 weeks.
A non-ensuite room in the same university accommodation costs £155 per week.
The additional disability-related cost is calculated like this:
- Total rent for the accessible accommodation: £175 x 48 weeks = £8,400
- Total rent for the non-accessible accommodation over the same period: £155 x 48 weeks = £7,440
- Additional cost of accessible accommodation = total accessible accommodation rent minus total non-accessible accommodation rent = £8,400 – £7,440 = £960
Maeve can apply for a grant of £960.
Example B – you need accommodation close to your campus
Sam is in their final year and is not eligible for a room in university-owned accommodation. They will be renting privately in a house share, but they need to live within a short walking distance from campus to manage their disability-related needs. Student properties in close proximity to campus are more expensive than others further away. The cost of Sam’s room is £190 per week for 52 weeks.
A similar house further away from campus costs £168 per week.
The additional disability-related cost is calculated like this:
- Total rent for the accessible accommodation: £190 x 52 weeks = £9,880
- Total rent for the non-accessible accommodation over the same period: £168 x 52 weeks = £8,736
- Additional cost of accessible accommodation = Total accessible accommodation rent minus non-accessible accommodation rent: £8,880 – £8,736 = £1,144
Sam can apply for a grant of £1,144.
Example C – your accessible accommodation is only available on a long contract
James requires wheelchair accessible accommodation with height adjusted facilities and sufficient space to manoeuvre in his wheelchair. The room that meets his needs costs £210 per week and can only be contracted for a minimum of 52 weeks. Non-accessible accommodation in the same area with similar facilities costs £180 per week, and can be contracted for a minimum of 48 weeks.
The additional disability-related cost is calculated like this:
- Total rent for the accessible accommodation: £210 x 52 = £10,920
- Total rent for the non-accessible accommodation: £180 x 48 = £8,640
- Additional cost of accessible accommodation = Total accessible accommodation rent minus non-accessible accommodation rent: £10,920 – £8,640 = £2,280
James can apply for a grant of £2,280.
Example A – you need to use taxis to commute to campus
Grian must commute to campus 3 days a week for 28 weeks throughout the academic year. Travelling by taxi is his only accessible transport option and the cost of a one-way taxi journey from his home to campus is £15, and therefore £30 for a return.
The equivalent journey by bus would cost £5.60 for a return journey.
The additional disability-related cost is calculated like this:
- Total cost for accessible transport:
- Number of return journeys throughout the year: 3 x 28 weeks = 84
- £30 x 84 = £2,520
- Total cost for non-accessible transport:
- Number of return journeys throughout the year: 3 x 28 = 84
- £5.60 x 84 = £470.4
- Additional cost of accessible transport = accessible transport cost minus non-accessible transport cost: £2,520 – £470.40 = £2,029.60
Grian can apply for a grant of £2,029.60.
